The Incredible Shrinking Woman and My Obession with Becoming Small

Let me first say that Lily Tomlin stole my heart at a very young age. Her Edith Ann character on Sesame Street was and still is one of my favorites. How many grown women can pull off a weirdo toddler character and be hilarious while doing so? And for the record I have a signed Edith Ann photo I bought on ebay framed on my wall, just sayin.

I think I might have given a pinky toe to have worked in the props department of this film. I’ll just go ahead and say it, that is on my “travel back in time” list of to-dos. It would go something like this “Jenny today your goal is to make life size barbie outfits for Lily, Jenny make us some giant cereal boxes out of cardboard, Oh jenny, we need you to make a giant fortune cookie out of foam” This sounds like a delight to me. There’s something about over sized props that makes my brain freak out. I guess it just instantly creates a surreal magical landscape with the familiar. I mean who doesn’t want to shrink down and live in Barbie’s Dream House. Although I was always pushing for the dreampool. The outdoor shower was the clincher for me.

Some of the incredible shrinking woman’s adventures included being kidnapped by a group of mad scientists, living in a dollhouse, falling down a garbage disposal, riding a gorilla named Sydney and getting on her literal soap box. Some visual highlights….

Re-watching this movie got me thinking about the idea of shrinking and why I find that so appealing. So naturally I started looking up movies where people shrink or become giants. (the giant thing less so but I’m still mesmerized with the extreme change in scale) These are the ones to check out.

4) Inner Space (haha, i couldn’t resist including this one)

So I guess my question now is when I so Lily Tomlin’s portrait do I make pocket size versions for everyone to carry around like their own personal incredible shrinking woman? Because I’m definitely making one for myself.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who has supported my work and shown so much love this year. It has been amazing to see my drawings come to life and make their way out into the world. I’m so excited to continue making things and dreaming big in 2012. I will spend the beginning of the year working on new portraits and also starting on a new children’s book. So cool and unexpected! So on this last day of 2011 I just want to say that I feel so grateful that I am able to live in such a great city, surround by amazing people and make art. Hard Hugs all around. See you in 2012 homies! XOXO

BUST Holiday Fair

The BUST Holiday Fair was a crazy and fun event! It was great to see so many familiar faces. I was very touched with how many people who had bought my things in the past came through to share how much they’ve enjoyed my work. So sweet! Here are some photos from the event.

Holiday Party Times!

So the holiday party planning is in high gear. I have been asked to participate in a holiday pop up shop event at the West Elm Store in Dumbo. West Elm and Etsy are teaming up for this event to promote their businesses in conjunction with local designers. West Elm has hand selected designers from the etsy website to integrate their goods through out the store for a one night shopping affair. I’m pretty excited to check this out. It will be held on Thursday Dec 1st from 6-9pm at the Dumbo West Elm. Is West Elm really ready for the weirdo pillow crew? We shall see.

After that I will be at the BUST Magazine Holiday Event on Dec 10th & 11th with my pal Killer Acid. This is one of my favorite holiday events of the season. Don’t miss it! We both have fun new stuff to debut and we’re really excited to be hanging with the BUST crew. Come by and make a party with us!
